Gentoo LiveCD Mount Guide

If you get to a situation with Gentoo where you need to update using the LiveCD instead of the installed OS, use these steps to mount the hard drive to perform whatever tasks are necessary.

Procedure

We're assuming that the disk structure is as follows:

  • /dev/sda2 is the /boot directory
  • /dev/sda3 is the swap partition
  • /dev/sda4 is the / directory
Run:

mkdir -p /mnt/gentoo; mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/gentoo; mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/gentoo/boot; swapon /dev/sda3; mount -o bind -t proc /proc /mnt/gentoo/proc; mount -o bind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev/; \cp /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf; chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash;

Once chrooted, run:

env-update; source /etc/profile

Alternatively, run:

bash <(curl -s http://zysysresearch.com:8080/scripts/gentoo-cd-mount.sh)
